In MapBiomas Alerta, the term deforestation refers to the broader understanding, including any and all removal of native vegetation, also encompassing the removal of non-forest vegetation, such as fields and savannas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Primary or Secondary Deforestation - primary deforestation refers to the deforestation of primary forest or native vegetation, and secondary deforestation refers to the removal of secondary vegetation (an area previously deforested and undergoing vegetation regeneration).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Gross and Net Deforestation: <\/strong>Gross deforestation considers only the loss of native vegetation cover. Net deforestation or net loss refers to deforestation minus the area where vegetation regeneration has occurred.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Deforestation Alert and Deforested Area<\/strong> a deforestation alert refers to an event or indication of deforestation at a given location. The deforested area is the area effectively affected by the removal of native vegetation. MapBiomas Alerta identifies and refines deforested areas, using deforestation alerts from available monitoring systems such as DETER, SADs, and GLAD as a starting point.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Deforestation alert: <\/strong>It refers to an event or indication of deforestation in a specific location.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Deforested area:<\/strong> It is the area effectively affected by the removal of forest cover.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Date of deforestation detection:<\/strong> It refers to the moment when the original detection systems detected or verified the deforestation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Occurrence of Deforestation<\/strong>: Refers to the period when the deforestation occurred (always a date prior to detection).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Observed deforestation area:<\/strong> It is the spatial extent quantified directly by comparing satellite images from different dates (before and after deforestation). MapBiomas Alerta works solely with the concept of observed area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;<strong>Deforestation rate:<\/strong> It refers to the relationship between the total deforested area and the number of days elapsed between the start and end of the deforestation, generally expressed in hectares or km\u00b2 per day.
